Yale University Freedom and Unfreedom Questions
Question Description
I’m working on a writing discussion question and need the explanation and answer to help me learn.
Where do you draw the line between freedom and unfreedom?
Last week, you drew up a list of the characteristics of a free society–the institutions, practices, and values necessary for people to be free to live a life they want to live? This week, with last week’s list of the characteristics of a free society in mind, mark the antebellum US social groups listed below as either free (F) or unfree (U).(The categories are not mutually exclusive. For example, free Blacks and women can be found in most, if not all, of the other groups. You are asked to describe the complications of your classifications in the next part.)_____ 1. Wealthy Elites_____ 2. Small Property Holders_____ 3. Property-less Whites_____ 4. Free Blacks_____ 5. Women_____ 6. Enslaved Persons
Write a paragraph (or more, as required) explaining why you divided these groups into “Free” and “Unfree” the way you did. What do the groups you marked “Free” have in common? What sets them apart from or makes their situation different from those you marked “Unfree”?
