WK-520 Legislative Policy Brief

It is important to stay up with current and proposed legislation. One of the key tasks you will have is to advocate for supporting or fighting potential legislation.  You can look at the legislative websites (local, state, and national) or follow specific advocacy organizations.  No matter what, keep an eye out for what is going on around your social issue when it comes to legislation and policy. 

Identify current legislation or proposed  legislation related to your social issue and create a handout that you would give to your legislator or other key  decision-makers regarding the legislation.  This should include an  overview of the social problem (why this is an important topic and the  reasons it should be addressed), a summary of the proposed legislation,  impact of the proposed legislation (can be supportive of your issue or  how it might make it worse), and what action you want the key  decision-maker to take.

You should cover:

• Overview of the Social Problem
• Summary of proposed legislative changes or policy
• Background and rationale regarding the impact of the proposed  legislation and the benefits of the policy to your population in  combating social injustice and/or harm relating to your social issue
• Call to Action
