What is culture ?

What is culture ?

Description

Part 1Watch this video  on culture by Seconde Nimenya:

As you watch the video, keep in mind that you are going to be giving a speech on a culture you belong to. The connection between culture and public speaking cannot be ignored. How we perceive our cultures and ourselves can frame how we view public speaking and the audience we are speaking with.  As we move into the cultural narrative assignment, the first step is to understand why culture is important and how it links to public speaking.

To get credit for this discussion you must:

Explain why talking about culture and public speaking are important. Be insightful and interesting.

Comment on posts from at least three of your peers.

Guidelines

  1. Your initial response should be 100-200 words in length, reflecting on the prompt above.
  2. Reply to at least three classmates’ posts. Your response to your classmate’s discussion should be around 50 words (each) and add to the discussion (i.e. reflecting on their response, asking questions, etc.). Be thoughtful and engaging in the responses you compose to your peers. How you respond to your peers will begin to demonstrate your careful and critical thinking skills.

Part 2
The goal of this assignment is to have you seek out samples of others doing online cultural narrative speeches. I put this a discussion so you can see other student’s videos. Critically examining other people speeches through the lens of the public speaking basics (verbal and nonverbal) will make you even more aware of how to present your speech. For this discussion, go to YouTube and search for students delivering speeches about their culture.  Search terms include ‘cultural narrative’ or ‘cultural artifact.’ There are a lot. The speeches do not have to be long. To get full credit you must:

Embed the speech.

Comment generally on the speech using the language of the public speaking basics. What is the student doing well? What does the student need to improve on?

Watch the video another student in the class has posted and comment on that video. What is that student doing well? What does that student need to improve on?
