Description
Holistic care is treating the patient as a whole and considers how illness affects their body, mind, emotions, spirituality, religion, and personal relationships. All these added dimensions of human existence were talked about by Jean Watsonàtheory of human caring, and it involves ten processes or áritas(Watson, 2021). Holistic care in nursing is when a comprehensive nursing approach to care for a patient is done. It addresses the complete personàphysical, psychological, social, spiritual, and emotional needs for optimal health and healing which creates a balanced life (Dossey & Keegan, 2016). Using this approach as APNs, it provides better understanding of our patients.eeds in all ramifications and leads to patientàhealing and satisfaction. Four ways to implement a holistic nursing approach to care and facilitate healing includes counseling, communication, education, and administering medication as necessary.
Creating a trusting relationship with the patient by having effective and clear communication is one way to provide holistic care. This involves sharing information with the patient, incorporating openness, mutuality and empathy in the situation of similarity (Dossey & Keegan, 2016). A well-established relationship built between a provider and a patient will foster trust from the patient to the provider which will improve patient quality of care. Patient education is another approach in implementing care and in this scenario, it involves educating the patient in self-care and self-help. The aim of providing education is to ensure that the patient understand, acknowledge, and accept the circumstances irrespective of being happy and sad at the same time. It also brings about the knowledge of her health and that of the newborn and ways of maintaining a good health. Counseling comes into this situation to help the patient obtain transpersonal learning through the sharing of past experiences together (Sitzman, 2017). Relationship counseling can help the patient for healing her emotional and social problem with her partner. Giving the patient medications as necessary will help in providing healing to the soreness she feels.
Holistic care can begin with the provider treating the patient with dignity, kindness, and respect to promote and create a trusting relationship (Ozan, Okumu & Lash, 2015). An APRN can incorporate Jean Watsonàtheory into his or her practice to bring about healing in a holistic manner or environment that will benefit patient and families in a positive way. The APNàunique emphasis on individually and holistically promoting health and well-being has resulted in APNs being the preferred health care provider for patients (Eriksson et al., 2018).
