Chapter 2

Punishment has a long history that dates back to ancient cultures and extends presently (Canton, 2021).Punishment has been employed to stop criminal conduct, maintain peace, and exact retribution. In addition to physical forms of punishment like imprisonment, corporal punishment, and the death sentence, there are psychological ones like humiliation and ridicule (Canton, 2021).

Physical punishment is the most common form used to inflict physical pain or discomfort on offenders as retribution. Imprisonment is one of the most commonly used forms of physical punishment, as offenders are confined to a certain area for a certain amount due to their criminal behavior. Corporal punishment is another form of physical punishment, which involves inflicting physical pain or discomfort on offenders as a form of retribution. Capital punishment is the most extreme form of physical punishment and involves the execution of an offender for a serious crime.

Inflicting psychological suffering or anguish on criminals as a form of vengeance is known as psychological punishment (Canton, 2021). One of the most popular types of psychological punishment is humiliation, which involves publicly humiliating and making fun of criminals for their criminal activity (Garland, 2018). Ostracism, in which criminals are banished from society, and mockery, in which offenders are derided and made fun of for their criminal actions, are two types of psychological punishment.

To conclude, punishment is a tried-and-true method for upholding law and order. There are many different types of punishment, including physical ones like incarceration, corporal punishment, and the death penalty, as well as psychological ones like shame and mockery. Each type of punishment has distinct repercussions, ranging from bodily suffering to psychological distress.
