A project is nothing more than a temporary endeavor that can last for a number of
hours, days, weeks, or even years at a time. It is desirable to have a well-defined beginning
and ending date for the project, in addition to having a comprehensive understanding of the
project’s overall goal (Wells & Kloppenborg, 2019). This holds true irrespective of the length
of time. Initiatives either add something new to the problem, or they ensure the extension or
improvement of an existing solution, method, or product provided by a third party. Either
way, they make a contribution to the solution in one of two ways.
Initiation of a project is the first phase or stage of a project, and its purpose is to lay
the groundwork for later phases, project owners or organizations, industries, or project
managers to decide whether or not to continue working on the project. This phase or stage is
also referred to as “project initiation.” Nevertheless, I would want to concentrate on two of
them: the construction of a business case and the conducting of a feasibility study. The
former determines whether or not the project will be lucrative, while the latter determines the
parameters within which it may function. The feasibility study analyzes the project to
determine whether or not it will generate a profit, as well as the parameters within which it
can function (Wells & Kloppenborg, 2019). To get the project off the ground, you will need
to complete approximately six distinct steps, each of which is of the utmost significance. But
there are two of them in particular that I want to focus on here. A business case is a document
that is used to provide information to the management of a project regarding the requirements
of the project as well as the finances for the project. This information includes both the
requirements and the finances for the project.
When it comes to the planning of a project, one of the most important roles is to
ensure that all of the project’s stakeholders are adequately addressed in the planning stages of
the project. It is of the utmost significance to have a good grasp of their points of view and
the reasons why they believe the project must move forward in the first place. In addition, it

is important to have a solid comprehension of the reasons why they believe the project must
move forward. In addition, the management of stakeholders enlightens us regarding which
stakeholders are vital for ensuring the practicability of the project and which stakeholders are
fine with merely getting information at a surface level (Wells & Kloppenborg, 2019). A lot of
factors have an effect on the project in a variety of ways, one of which is the degree to which
each stakeholder is expected to participate in the process of determining which other
stakeholders must provide their approval to essential aspects of the project.

Week 1 Discussion
Activities Associated with Initiating Stage of Projects
First, we will focus on initiating the project activities. Developing a project charter is one
of the most crucial steps in initiating the project. It involves creating an official document that
formally approves and starts the project and assigns a leader or a project manager to manage it.
The project charter sets the goals, scope, and timelines. The project scope identifies the people
(stakeholders) involved and helps all parties involved understand what needs to be achieved in
that project. By creating a project charter, the team can ensure they are all on the same page and
have a level of understanding and working towards the same goals. This helps avoid confusion or
misunderstandings later on and ensures the project succeeds (Kloppenborg et al., 2018).
Identifying the stakeholders and their requirements is another critical activity or task for project
initiation. This primarily entails identifying and understanding all participants most likely
affected by the project’s outcomes and goals and their interests, demands, and project-related
requirements (Institute, 2021). The project team must obtain information from interested parties
to guarantee that the project’s goals and objectives align with their needs and that they are
considered during project planning and execution. Such activity ensures that the project is in
sync (in simpler words) with the requirements and desires of stakeholders, reducing the
likelihood of future conflicts or confusion.
Activities Associated with the Planning Stage of Projects
One of the primary activities related to project planning is defining the scope. Defining
the scope is an essential step in project planning. It involves setting boundaries and determining
what the project will accomplish. This helps to prioritize tasks and resources, avoid scope creep,
and ensure everyone is working towards the same goals under the same direction. Defining the
3
scope also involves identifying time, budget, and resource constraints. By identifying conditions
early, the project team can take steps to mitigate their impact and adjust the project plan.
Defining the scope is critical to project success and helps prevent costly mistakes and delays. As
we see in our daily work tasks, if the scope is incomplete or provides partial information, it adds
to the schedule and eventually leads to creep and time build-up for the project team. It is always
desirable for the project sponsors and teams to strive for a complete and solid project scope that
provides only minimal assumptions if any. Another primary activity associated with planning the
project stage is to create a detailed work breakdown structure (WBS). A work breakdown
structure (WBS) is essential in project planning. It includes breaking down the deliverables of
the project into smaller, more manageable tasks and organizing them in a hierarchical structure
(Watt, 2014). WBS assists in identifying the critical activities required to complete the project
and provides a clear picture of the project’s scope. It also aids in the identification and inclusion
of all necessary tasks in the project plan. The project team can better understand the
dependencies between tasks and identify potential risks or issues early in the project lifecycle by
creating a work breakdown structure. This contributes to the project being completed on time
and within budget.
