Walden University Focus on Identity Development Discussion
Question Description
I’m working on a social work discussion question and need the explanation and answer to help me learn.
Middle childhood is marked by several changes leading to identity formation. During this period, children begin expanding views of themselves and their social world and are acquiring fundamental skills important to navigate their environments. Additionally, children are exposed to adults and peers outside the family. Key social events include entry into preschool and elementary school, and the introduction of school opens up an entirely new world of relationships with others. It is at school that friendships become increasingly important as children start to build relationships with other people outside of the family unit. Also, at this stage, children become selective about who they choose as friends and start making judgments about other children.
For this Discussion, you explore the role peer and group acceptance has on identity development and successful adjustment among children in middle childhood.
