Walden University Criteria for Problem Statements Discussion

When you begin looking for a topic for your dissertation, you will identify a larger societal or educational problem that intrigues you. Then you will reduce your educational problem to a problem statement for research purposes. Problem statements are developed objectively from gaps in research literature identified through systematic reviews of that literature rather than through personal observation or experience.

In addition, social problems can generate multiple research problems that may need to be narrowed. A study has only one problem statement focusing on one research problem. So, finding a problem statement is not always as clean a process as one might hope.

In this Assignment, you will read the course introduction and the Dawidowicz (2016) article on problem and purpose statements. Reflect on the difference between a broader educational problem and a research problem, as well as how a problem statement is used to present the research problem.

The use of the word problem can have different meanings when used to describe an educational problem and a research problem. When you hear the word problem, consider what it means to you.

Look through news articles and reports to find a current educational issue and read about the issue.ost the following:

• Post one sentence explaining the difference in the use of the word problem in an educational problem and in a research problem statement.
• In one sentence, report what issue from the news article and/or report you read and tell why it is an educational problem.
• In one to two sentences, explain one aspect of the current educational problem you identified, which you think has not been researched (gap in research; what we do not know about this educational problem that we need to know).
• In one to two sentences, explain what important information would be provided to stakeholders about this issue if it were researched (research problem statement).
