The purpose of the case vignette and assessment tools assignment is to assist students in integrating theory and practice and for students to have the opportunity to use their analytic and critical thinking skills as they address complex clinical cases (Competency 8), identify appropriate assessment tools to use for assessing complex clinical cases, assess clients’ readiness to change (Competency 7), and apply ethical decision-making skills to issues specific to the identified case (Competency 1).

Students will be randomly assigned a Primary Practice Approach at the beginning of the semester to be used in the case vignette assignment. Cases to be used in the assignment are posted in Canvas under module 1. When completing the assignment, students will choose any secondary practice approach from the theories addressed in the required text, Cooper & Lesser (2021). Utilizing these two practice approaches, students will address the following four questions:

Compare and contrast how the use of two practice theories discussed in this course may be applied to the case (approximately 3 pages). The first of these two approaches must be the assigned model. In this section, you must directly and specifically describe what techniques and interventions you would use with this client based on the primary and secondary practice theories. You are painting a picture of what the course of therapy might look like using these approaches with this specific client. This section is NOT asking for a general discussion of the practice approaches, it is asking for a description of specific therapeutic interventions to be used with the client vignette. This section is worth 8 points.

Identify two standardized assessment tools that may be useful for the case. For each assessment measure, provide the following: (a) a brief description of the measure; (b) information on the reliability and validity of the measure (with citations); (c) a description of the training needed to administer the measure; (d) a brief description of how to score the measure and interpret the results; and (e) how to obtain the measure and if there are any costs for obtaining the measure. A copy of the instruments should be attached to the assignment (approximately 1 page). This section is worth 4 points.

  1. Discuss how the clientàreadiness to change would be assessed. Be sure to give your assessment of the specific stage of change the client presents (approximately 1 page). This section is worth 4 points.
  2. Identify and describe an ethical issue that may arise when working with the client and discuss the decision-making process used to address the ethical issue.
