1)Reforms are ideas, laws or policies that are implemented in specific areas of interests to improve contitions, rights, or effectiveness. Reforms can be implemented at any given time where a problem or issue presents itself or becomes persistent in efforts to improve, correct, or prevent future issues from arising. Certain reforms can impact disparities in the criminal justice system. For example, when it comes to policing, a police brutality reform can be implemented in order to prevent constant brutality against blacks and minorities. In the court system, a reform act that focuses on fair sentencing on minorities can prevent disparities amongst unfair sentencing. An important factor to consider when these reforms are implemented in the criminal justice system is the ability to show accountability for those that choose not to follow or respect the reform in place. Although these reforms are put into place for correction or improvement, many officers or actors in the courthouse my choose to not abide by the rules and those who don’t should be held accountable and should face disciplinary action.

2)There are many reforms that could be made to the criminal justice system. The important thing to remember is that these reforms could be continuously researched, discussed, and changed based on their outcomes. One thing that could be reformed in law enforcement and corrections is more police training, mental health reviews and background checks, and more conviction for police brutality. Too many black and brown people have been murdered in the last decade alone (George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tamir Rice, Trevon Martin, just to name a few) and there must be more training for police officers and more social workers, mental health advocates, and educators, come in to change this horrific trend. Additionally, there needs to be more diversity in leadership, law enforcements, and judicial committees. This may ensure more fairness in verdicts for people of color, and less “slap on the wrist” verdicts for white people. Just this week, many opinions have arose regarding the final verdict of Kyle Rittenhouse, the young man who murdered several individuals in “self defense” during a protest in Kenosha, WI. Because of the overbearing white supremacy involved in his specific case regarding the judge, Kyle was was found not guilty on all accounts. Without a doubt, the outcome would have been significantly different if Kyle was a person of color. If more diversity, more education, more resources were provided for inmates who will soon be readjusted into society, the disparities in race versus sentencing would be significantly less, and people of color may finally be treated more fairly in the justice system.
