Background
Consider the following assigned readings while preparing to write this essay: Chapter 3:
Autobiography in Reading Critically Writing Well; Annie Dillardàn American Childhood¨pp.49-51).
Essay Topic Instructions
For this essay write an autobiography essay but it should just focus on one significant event in
your life. This is for English 1A class(12th grade).
? You can describe a childhood memory that to this day holds meaning for example: a
sports game where there was a climax to the story or another topic. When writing
this essay try to focus on these questions: As you look through the lens of hindsight,
is there anything you would have done differently? Is there a lesson learned, feelings
of euphoria, unresolved issue, or regret that you carry because of this memory? In
the end, why do you think you still remember this event? What impression would
you like your Autobiography essay to convey?
? Choose an event that you feel comfortable writing about for this audience (your teacher
and classmates), given your purpose (to present something meaningful).
? Consider how you can tell the story dramatically.
? Try to convey the meaning and importance in your lifeèat we call the
autobiographical significanceæ the event you have chosen to write about. Think about
how you can lead readers to understand you better, to reflect on their own lives, to
become aware of social and cultural influences, or to gain some other insights.
? Make sure the story is written in a way where the story is exciting, suspenseful, and
meaningful.
? Achieve this by narrating dramatically, parenting and places vividly and conveying
significance powerfully.
? Remember there must be a climax in the story or itàgoing to fall flat and make sure
it includes dialogue in the story.
? Have a good thesis and try to add foreshadowing to the story.
