Week 3 – This week you are studying the biological macromolecules that are instrumental in governing how our bodies function.  One of these macromolecules is a specific protein called an enzyme which also known as a biological catalyst. Enzymes are easily identified by the suffix -ase.

A catalyst is a chemical that speeds up chemical reactions without itself being changed during the course of the reaction. Metabolism is the total of all of the chemical reactions that occur in an organism.  In order formetabolism to occur at speeds necessary for cell functions, a catalyst – or enzyme – is needed.

Each cell in your body contains several thousand different enzymes, most of which are small or large proteins or protein complexes. Most enzymes are highly specific in their action, catalyzing only one type of chemical reaction or, at most, a small number of very similar reactions.  As such, enzymes play a vital role in the proper functioning of our body. Lactase is an example of an enzyme that is needed in order for us to properly digest the sugar lactose, which is found in dairy products. Individuals who lack this enzyme are unable to digest or breakdown this sugar and therefore cannot eat dairy without experiencing side effects.

Research and share with the class a human condition that is the result of the malfunctioning of an enzyme, the absence of an enzyme, or low levels of an enzyme.
