What is the final product? As stated in the syllabus, I expect this to be an academic paper; however, it can be informational rather than argumentative. In other words, this is an essay.

An essay on what? It is an essay that centers in some way on your primary source (I’ll attach it). The point is to return to the primary source analysis that you did as the first piece of this assignment, but this time with the context required to make an argument based in historical fact. So you are rewriting your primary source analysis as an essay, with citations.

How do I make an argument out of my primary source analysis? If you’re really lost, I recommend a few fill-in-the-blank thesis statements:

• “(My author) wrote (my source) in (this way) because….”
• “(My source) gives insight into (this historical process) by…”
• “The intended reader of (my source) would have (gained this knowledge/felt this emotion) because of (this technique used by my author)”
