University of California San Diego Artworks Analysis Essay

Question Description

3pages, double space, 12-time new roman

Paintings of work (or not work) cannot be separated from the work that goes into producing them. Painters, as workers, represent work; they objectify work. Which is to say, painters give work a particular shape and a distinctive set of forms. They organize work and color it. Think, for example, about Constable and how the “image of work” in Haywain can be grasped only after we attend to Constable’s way of composing a picture, his interest in detail, those white specks, etc.

Focus on the technical part. These two of the paintings what their formal make-up (e.g., composition, brushstroke, surface quality, space, etc.) tells us about the “images of work” they construct. Be strategic, here.
