Pavement (1995)
Choreography by Kyle Abraham
Music by Ryuichi Sakamoto and Alva Noto (Mixed Soundtrack from many other sources)
Abstract / Summary: Inspired by the 1991 film ‘Boyz n the Hood,’ the writings of American civil rights activist W.E.B. Du Bois, and Kyle Abraham’s own childhood, Pavement takes seven dancers through a culture plagued by discrimination and genocide in Pittsburgh’s historically black neighbourhoods. The performance takes place on a basketball court and is set to an eclectic mix of Bach, Benjamin Britten, Sam Cooke and Donny Hathaway, as well as audio clips from the John Singleton film. Dancer and choreographer Abraham combines the spontaneity of urban dance, the precision of ballet, and the social-dance vernacular in his trademark interdisciplinary style, which he refers to as “post-modern gumbo”. Some would say that he brought hip-hop back to operas, others say he brought classical dance back to the streets. What is not debated, however, is the ability of Abraham to abolish the boundaries of art between bitumen and parquet.
