Response 1.) Michael

Some researchers believe the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the UTAUT model have been used so extensively that they fail to provide significant value to new studies. I agree with this statement for several reasons. It is not just because the models have been used so extensively but because there are inherent limitations to these models (Shachak et al., 2019).

One of the common criticisms of the TAM is its over-simplicity since the model consists of only three constructs: perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and usage intention (Shachak et al., 2019). The outcome of applying the TAM is usage intention, not actual usage. This means it is limited to evaluating the intention to use new technology while falling short of evaluating the actual usage of the information systems technology. The UTAUT model provides additional constructs such as social influence, facilitating conditions, and habit as well as mediating demographic characteristics (Shachak et al., 2019). However, a shortcoming of both models is they assume a causal influence of intention to use on actual usage without accounting for other variables and constructs (Shachak et al., 2019).

Organizations that are only interested in understanding the constructs impacting the likelihood their employees will accept a new technology can benefit from the TAM and UTAUT models. However, the overwhelming evidence from all previous studies is the strongest predictor of intent to use new information technology is perceived usefulness or performance expectancy (Shachak et al., 2019). Therefore, it seems unnecessary to apply these models to another type of information technology.

Both the TAM and UTAUT focus on the first step in the implementation of new information technology, which is acceptance (Shachak, 2019). In the healthcare industry, TAM and UTAUT studies were instrumental in helping health organizations with the uptake of electronic health records, computerized physician order entry, and, more recently, telehealth (Shachak, 2019). Researchers and organizations should move beyond these models and focus on the alignment of people, technology, and workflow integration. Examples of existing theories and frameworks include that go beyond usage intention include Activity Theory, Adaptive Structuration Theory, and Nonadaption, Abandonment, Scale-up, Spread, and Sustainability (NASSS) frameworks.

Response 2.) Mary

As the use of technology in almost any environment has direct behavioral intentions of four key constructs that include performance expectancy, facilitating conditions, effort expectancy and social influence. TAM and UTAUT models users find fault on the models being to facile with a perspective that limits perspectives. As a result, individual beliefs, acumen and usage intentions often only providing a limited amount of knowledge as a contribution. In my opinion, I believe that age and gender has played a role in how users value and the use of TAM and UTAUT concepts.

In my opinion, the research suggest that TAM and UTAUT models use have plateaued and has only been able to provide limited knowledge and thus I must agree that both models are over used in information systems research and are not as useful as they need to be.
