UMB Good Will Hunting Film Dysfunctionality Analytical Review

UMB Good Will Hunting Film Dysfunctionality Analytical Review

Question Description

Movies have a powerful social influence on our society. Their narratives very often emphasize issues related to interpersonal communication. For example, some movies focus on the wonders of love, while others focus on heartache or trauma. You will write a paper presenting a thorough, creative, and cohesive analysis of interpersonal communication themes represented in a movie.

The paper will contain the following elements:

  • Select a movie from the list provided. When you organize your paper, use the bolded text as your subtitles:
  • Themes Related to Interpersonal Communication. Dissect the movie integrating four course concepts from three different lecture topics that you think are relevant. Each concept should have its own paragraph and should be approximately half a page. For each concept, you should:
    • Define the concept using your own words.
    • Make a clear connection between the concept and the movie. Speculate on what this movie tells us as consumers about interpersonal communication. You should use quotes to help the reader understand why you feel the concept is embodied in the movie, unless you are describing characters’ nonverbal behaviors.
  • Recommendation. No one is a perfect communicator. Propose a well thought-out recommendation for one/all of the characters depicted in the movie. Frame the recommendation as if you are a new expert in the field of interpersonal communication, and you are offering advice to your audience. This recommendation should be rooted in course content, meaning that the recommendation should address specific course terms and its logic should be tied to course discussions (the textbook has some great examples of this).

You must find one empirical source (i.e., an academic journal article that describes a study that was conducted, like a survey or an experiment) to support your solution or recommendation. This can come from one of the online course readings or something you found on Google Scholar. For example, is there a verbal or nonverbal strategy that has been shown to be effective? This must be referenced using APA format both in text and on a separate References page (see “Citing Research Papers” for more information).

Regardless of which concepts you choose, be mindful that this course is about interpersonal communication. Therefore, be sure to emphasize issues related to interpersonal communication (e.g., how personality influences communication, how perception influences communication, etc.).

Course concepts should be specific, like the terms you would be studying for the course’s exams (this can include theories). GOOD examples of this specificity include avoidant attachment, self-fulfilling prophecy, positive politeness strategies, Expectancy Violation Theory, conformity orientation, and so on. BAD examples include personality, attachment orientation, conflict, gender, debilitative emotions, and so on. Please consult with me if you are unsure.
