Part 1

Race and ethnicity, class, and region have shaped women’s lives over the course of UShistory. Choose three of the following events, developments, or ideas and explain how these social hierarchies have shaped women’s experiences of these events: antebellum reform; work (paid and unpaid); education; reproduction and motherhood; and late- nineteenth century activism. Think about change over time across the nineteenth century. On the whole, would you emphasize a shared experience of womanhood, or thedivisions between women, in US women’s history? Explain why. How did women experience and participate in the Civil War and Reconstruction? Besure to analyze how social difference (class, race, status, and region) shaped women’sexperiences. How much of a turning point was this era for women in the United States? Which women? Why?
