The Nursing Practice Providing Quality Care Discussion Response

Role Modeling

The nursing practice is centered on providing quality care that guarantees patients’ general well-being (Watson & Woodward, 2020). To avail quality care, student nurses must demonstrate extensive knowledge and relevant skills acquired from school. However, schools barely teach students how to interact effectively with patients and advance their professionalism (Felstead, 2013). It is for this reason that Felstead highlights the importance of role models in nursing practice. According to the author, nursing practice often entails identifying role models who illustrate exemplary behaviors that a student can emulate to advance professionalism and avail quality care based on a patient’s needs and expectations (Felstead, 2013). A caring role model in the nursing practice is an individual keen on illustrating exemplary qualities and behaviors that advance the delivery of quality care suited to a patient’s needs. This can be achieved by demonstrating ideal selfcare.

According to Jean Watson’s caring philosophy, providing quality care restores life energies while potentiating individuals’ capabilities (Watson & Woodward, 2020). The benefits associated with providing care include advancing self-actualization among nurses from both a professional and personal level (Watson & Woodward, 2020). A role model is supposed to nurture others into wholeness, which can be achieved by demonstrating the importance of self-care. Nurses can only offer quality care by understanding the importance of self-care. Incorporating the caring theory into the concept of a caring role model fosters the development of ideal qualities and the assimilation of appropriate behavior that guarantee professional socialization and better patient outcomes. This is because a caring role model is supposed to portray admirable qualities such as empathy and emotional intelligence, which others can emulate and advance the delivery of patient-centered care. Besides, a caring role model must offer accommodations that allow others to challenge them in a manner that fosters character development and professionalism.
