The Reign of Terror DBQs

Historical Background

After Louis XVI’s execution, the National Assembly appointed a Committee of Public Safety to run the country. Although there were twelve men involved Robespierre soon dominated the committee. A great orator, he led the army to protect the nation’s borders. Then he launched a nationwide campaign of repression that came known as the Reign of Terror. Terror became the order of the day. More than 40,000 people were sent to the guillotine between 1793-1794 because they were suspected of anti-revolutionary activities or helping France’s enemies. Robespierre believed that “softness to traitors [would] destroy [them] all.”
