Strayer University IT Certification Discussion
Question Description
What do you think about certification? How could certification add to your career plans? Are there any negatives surrounding the Microsoft Certification? Do you plan to get one? Which one(s)? How will you know when you are ready? Have you looked at the discount certificates we have for Strayer students? Did you learn anything you didnt know before from your classmates over in the certification discussion?
Flesh out your thoughts and interact with your classmates. Post your initial response by Wednesday each week and then return on a couple of other days to see whats going on with the discussions. The more you interact, the more you learn from your peers, and the more you share with them about what you know. Youll also be showing your instructor what youve picked up.

Hello Prof and classmates,
As an IT major, especially in the field of cybersecurity, certification is the key. I believe it’s essential because certification plays a significant role. Certificate in my career plan is the ultimate because even after the degree, employers are looking for certification as an additional prerequisite for employment, so for me, I need a certificate and would appreciate any help from Professor Shaun and classmates to share any information.
The Microsoft Certification for me is one I would like to have, concerning the certification’s hostile surroundings, and I don’t have any idea of any. I hopefully plan to get one. I already have had security + that expired last year, and am looking forward to retaking it. The other certification am targeting is Certification and Accreditation Professional (CAP) and Network plus.
I think been ready is to prepare for the exam as much as you can before taking it. I have not looked at the Strayer certification discount and would appreciate you, Professor Shaun, to mentor me about them.
One of the things I learn is that most students working right now do not care about the certification. The fact that MCSA certification is going away, according to Robert’s discussion, is enormous.
Thank you,
Joseph Uranta

While certifications are nice, I’m not too sure of the need for MCSA going forward in this field. It seems as though every time you turn around, large corporations are farming out their IT services on a contract basis or moving to a cloud storage/SAAS model. Unless you are going to be working for a government agency or one of the cloud providers, I don’t see where this particular certification has value that distinguishes it from other certifications such as Network Pro, Network Security Pro, Routing and Switching Pro etc. I think the value of having a CIS degree with a concentration in a particular area speaks louder than any individual certification. Multiple certifications with plenty of work experience is, in my view, the only thing that would carry as much weight. I definitely learned a lot about servers and the knowledge dovetailed nicely with other courses I’ve completed for CIS at Strayer but, as we all know, technology never stops evolving so, today’s must have certification isn’t necessarily a ticket to perpetual prosperity.
