Strategizing and Creating Change – Peer Comment
Description
Nursing associations have the power and resources to make policy changes. Nurse leaders can use their organizations/associations as a platform to stand on and make changes in healthcare and their profession. American Nursing Association (ANA) has a long history of standing up and protecting the interest of nurses (American Nursing Association, 2023). This intellectual capital of nursing associations creates a backbone for leaders to stand on and understand the ins and outs of policymaking.
Since the pandemic, there has been an increase in the number of nurses leaving the field due to unsafe conditions. The shortage of nurses has created a crisis within our hospitals, which impacts staff morale and ultimately affects patient care. Studies have shown an increase in the risk of adverse events in patients due to unsafe staffing conditions and an increase in mortality rates (Bartmess et al., 2021). In 2021, ANA sent a letter to the US Department of Health and Human Services (HSS) urging them to declare a national nursing staffing crisis and to create solutions (Muoio, 2021). ANA compiled a list of policy solutions in this letter that should be considered. Safe staffing is one of ANAàfederal policies that they are currently working on; they also work with each state’s nursing associations to create committees to determine safe nurse-to-patient ratios. As of March 2022, ANA reports, v states currently address nurse staffing hospitals through either laws or regulation (ANA, 2023).
Professional nurses are responsible for leading and creating the change they envision, along with the power of an association to share their voice; lobbyists and stakeholders are bound to listen. Successful policy advocacy will depend on an association’s power, time, will, and energy. We must utilize the total capacity of the nursing organization to have an optimal impact on policies, practice, and society (Chiu et al., 2021).
