You will select a speech video, at least 10 minutes in length, from quite literally anywhere (political campaign speeches, inaugural addresses, speeches from events, TED Talks, eulogies, etc.) and analyze it following the description below. It can also be a talking head style video as long as the speaker is seen for a significant period of time. It also needs to be one speaker talking for the duration of the video OR you may use part of a longer video with multiple speaker if you focus on one and that one person has at least a 10 minutes uninterrupted section. You will submit a link to your speech video, it must be a video not just a manuscript, to Canvas for approval. You will also submit a draft of your paper, points are awarded for completion and I will provide feedback on things you still need or place where the textbook might be beneficial.
Formatting note
Note that this paper is meant to analyze multiple elements of the speech not provide a play by play of every minute of the speech. In fact only one paragraph should be dedicated to discussing the content of the speech and it should only be a brief overview of the thesis, main points, and how they incorporated supporting evidence. The paper should be broken into the following parts, you may include headings.
Introduction: Brief introduction to the paper overviewing what is to come in the paper and transitioning to the first section. This should not be an introduction to the speaker, the purpose is to introduce the reader to the paper that you wrote.
Situation: Chapter 12 section 2 discusses analyzing the speaking situation. Use this chapter as a guide to discussing the situation and how the speaker did or did not adapt their speech to the specifics of the situation, such as the audience demographics, the speaking occasion (time, place, audience expectations). Cite the textbook in this paragraph/section to support your analysis.
Organization: How was the speech organized (introduction, body, conclusion)? Describe the speakeràorganizational pattern, use the textbook to support your analysis. Describe the transitions between main How did they gain the audienceàattention in the introduction? How well did you as an audience member follow the speech? Basically was this speech effectively organized or was it difficult to follow? Use the textbook to support your analysis, and why it was or was not effective. You might even discuss ways they could have improved organizationally.
Content: Did the speaker provide a thesis? What was it? What was their overall points? Briefly describe the main Did the speaker provide examples to support the main points? This should be brief but give a sense of what you took away from the speech.
Style and Delivery: Describe the speakeràenergy and dynamism. Describe their voice. How did they use vocal rate, pitch, and volume to enhance the message? Describe the nonverbal delivery (use the podium, movement around room)? Describe facial expressions and Use the textbook here to support your analysis, define terms or provide support for their style and delivery being effective or not, basically look to the textbook advice and discuss how well this person did or did not adhere to that advice AND whether or not that was effective for you as the audience member.
Reflection: What did you learn from this speech? How may your own future presentations be enhanced by what you observed? What are your big takeaways in terms of presenting information or creating arguments effectively.
Conclusion: Brief conclusion reviewing the paper. This should be a review of what you covered in the paper, not a review of the speech.
