Social media and social networking are two things that sound similar but serve different purposes and have different interactions. An analogy I found that relates to the two social classes is how a person has a knitting group and a job working at the rec center which hosts that knitting group; the ‘knitting group’ being social networking and the ‘job’ being social media. The connections you make with your group are interpersonal and require interactivity and also listening–like building a solid friendship–whereas your job wants you to bring more people in and make sure they stay. In all, social media acts like the host so that an individual or business places itself in a niche and social networking is the relationships being built with people in that same niche.
