In February 1899, British novelist and poet Rudyard Kipling wrote a poem entitled (e White ManàBurden: The United States and The Philippine Islands. n this poem, Kipling urged the U.S. to take up the µrden/f empire, as had Britain and other European nations.  Kipling is famous for writing THE JUNGLE BOOK.

Go send your sons to exile 

To serve your captives’ need

To wait in heavy harness

On fluttered folk and wild/p>

Your new-caught, sullen peoples,

Half devil and half child

Originally written in 1763, the songàpopularity increased in the late 1800s during imperialism and again after WWI and WWII.

When Britain first, at Heaven’s command

Arose from out the azure main;

This was the charter of the land,

And guardian angels sang this strain:

“Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:

“Britons never will be slaves.”

The nations, not so blest as thee,

Must, in their turns, to tyrants fall;

While thou shalt flourish great and free,

The dread and envy of them all.

After reading these two documents, imperialism was impacted by many things but for this discussion it will focus on Social Darwinism.

How did Social Darwinism play a role in Imperialism?  Also, how do the documents and videos provided illustrate Edward Said’s quotes about Imperialism?
