In February 1899, British novelist and poet Rudyard Kipling wrote a poem entitled (e White ManàBurden: The United States and The Philippine Islands. n this poem, Kipling urged the U.S. to take up the µrden/f empire, as had Britain and other European nations. Take up the White Manàburden/p>
Send forth the best ye breed/p>
Go send your sons to exile
To serve your captives’ need
To wait in heavy harness
On fluttered folk and wild/p>
Your new-caught, sullen peoples,
Half devil and half child
Take up the White Manàburden
In patience to abide
To veil the threat of terror
And check the show of pride;
By open speech and simple
An hundred times made plain
To seek anotheràprofit
And work anotheràgain
Take up the White Manàburden/p>
And reap his old reward:
RULE BRITANNIA
Originally written in 1763, the songàpopularity increased in the late 1800s during imperialism and again after WWI and WWII.
When Britain first, at Heaven’s command
Arose from out the azure main;
This was the charter of the land,
And guardian angels sang this strain:
“Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
“Britons never will be slaves.”
2
The nations, not so blest as thee,
Must, in their turns, to tyrants fall;
While thou shalt flourish great and free,
The dread and envy of them all.
“Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
“Britons never will be slaves.”
