There are three general purposes of public speaking – to inform, to persuade, and to mark a special occasion.  Derived from the general purpose and the topic, a Specific Purpose Statement states the goal of the speech.  Review Stand Up Speak Out’s. Examples:

My speech will inform the audience on the definition, the causes, and the treatments of Communication Apprehension.

By the end of my speech, the audience will be informed on the three areas of Communication Apprehension – Cognitive, Affective, and Behavioral aspects.

My speech will inform the audience on the three stages of employment interviews: before, during, and after the interviews.

A Central Idea Statement is one complete sentence that summarizes the speech.  This statement often states your main points in the speech.

Examples:

The three aspects of Communication Apprehension include the definition, the causes, and the treatments.

The three areas of Communication Apprehension are Cognitive, Affective, and Behavioral aspects.

The three stages of employment interviews include prior to, during, and after the interviews.
