SDSU Business Methods of Supervising Workers Discussion
Description
What are your assumptions about the most effective way to manage people? There is a human side to all management decisions, and it is important for manageràto understand that their personal assumptions impact how they manage people. We will discuss the principles that inform the ideas, implications and questions that all managers should answer as they approach their role as managers.
How managers manage the people they manage flows directly from how they perceive the people they manage. If you assume the people you manage are unmotivated, managers use a carrot and stick approach. If you assume the people you manage are looking for opportunities to engage, you will look for collaborative opportunities.
This week, we will also look at two different theories on how we approach work, Theory X and Theory Y. We will discuss how these theories work from a human resource management approach. In addition, we will explore how these theories totally change a manageràrole in an organization.
There is a need for regular and consistent feedback for employees. It is important to make that feedback meaningful. Letàexamine the importance of the relationship between a manager and the employee to ensure a good, harmonious working relationship and work environment.
There are risks and rewards associated with each type of management approach. Letàlook at the importance of a clear understanding of a manageràexpectations, as well as the measurement of success of a manager-employee relationship.
Consider the impact the wrong human relationship approach can have on the production and work environment, and the importance of respect being the foundation of all management decisions.
