Scriptwriting Question
Description
Your project will demonstrate your ability to apply class concepts in a creative way. This project is an opportunity to practice techniques observed and practiced during the term to exemplify a critical engagement with Disney film and story through a feminist lens. Feminist construction of knowledge recognizes that there are many ways of learning and different people excel in different areas therefore the film/story option is designed to allow students to demonstrate an understanding of the concepts studied during the term and their connection to themes of intersectionality of difference, categories of identification, and systems of oppression within the media using an alternative learning medium. In particular, applying media studies concepts in the creation of a piece of media will demonstrate your understanding of how difference, power, and discrimination can be challenged.
There will be questions in the discussion board throughout the term for you to share ideas and plan/prepare for your project.
The final project will assess the 3rd DPD Learning Outcome:
Analyze ways in which the interactions of social categories, such as race, ethnicity, social class, gender, religion, sexual orientation, disability, and age, are related to difference, power, and discrimination in the United States,
And the following Learning Outcomes:
demonstrate a theoretical framework for critical analysis of Disney representations in terms of gender, race, class, sexuality, and nation.
analyze power, particularly in terms of structural and institutionalized forms of oppression.
recognize other, related themes in relation to the Disney canon, including colonialism, conquest, militarism, globalization, war, and genocide.
demonstrate writing skills in feminist critical analysis on the politics of representation.
- demonstrate skills to be able to talk with others, including children viewers, about the power and social meanings of Disney images.
- This should be somewhere between a spec script and a production script. Some camera angles and lighting, etc should be included since this is one way to address how women are portrayed in film. This is a solo or 2 person-written screenplay. This must be an obvious screenplay meant to be filmed and should contain directions for camera angles, positioning, lighting, special effects, etc. It should not be a dialogue-only piece.
- See Screenplay formatsLinks to an external site. for descriptions of the format for the screenplay. This is a general guideline; I won grade on detailed formatting as long as it is looks like a screenplay and it is clear what is to happen from camera, focus, effects, etc. perspectives. If you don find yourself including camera angles and editing type direction, perhaps the short story is a better option than the screenplay.
