Description
I feel more interested in “Xala” than “Le Mandat” due to its seemingly wider view of the issues. The film explores the themes of corruption, greed, and the clash between traditional African values and Western modernization. It is definitely clear that both films address themes related to the effects of colonialism and Westernization on African societies; however, while “Le Mandat” focuses on economic exploitation and family ties, “Xala” delves into issues related to power, patriarchy, and political corruption which draw my attention more.
The film depicts the African custom of polygamy and the Xala ceremony, which involves a lavish and expensive marriage ceremony where the groom pays a dowry to the bride’s family. The film also shows how African traditions and customs have been corrupted and commercialized in the post-colonial era.
The film carries a message about the hypocrisy and corruption of African elites who, despite their supposed nationalism and commitment to African values, continue to exploit their own people and enrich themselves at their expense. The film also critiques the effects of Western capitalism on African society and culture.
The ending of the film is open to interpretation but can be seen as a metaphor for the impotence of the African ruling class and their inability to lead their countries to progress and development. El Hadji is left alone and impotent, surrounded by the decay and corruption of his society, as the Xala ceremony continues in the background, symbolizing the perpetuation of the same corrupt system
