Research and Evidence-Based Practice – Peer Comment
Description
Evidence-based practice was defined at the beginning of this course. We defined it as developing our practice and formulating actions based on evidence. We are going to explore how evidence-based practice (EBP) differs from research. There are ways in which we can distinguish an evidenced-based intervention project in comparison to the cultivation of knowledge generated from research. The nursing publication provided will be used as an example to identify the major differences between an intervention explored for a research project versus knowledge birthed from research.
As advanced practitioners, we are responsible for keeping up with evidence to maximize our care and foster the most informed decisions. The research evidence we use for these decisions would be found on internal sites such as UptoDate (Melynk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). Melynk & Fineout-Overholt (2019) discuss 8 different models that involve the identification and application of evidence-based medicine and the Stetler Model is one of them. The Stetler Model was founded on critical thinking for the advanced nurse practitioner to integrate internal and external evidence from both research and practice-based medicine and accounts for knowledge birthed from research (Melynk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019).
In comparison, an evidence-based research intervention is encouraged in the workplace with authentic leadership because they engage their team by promoting EBP through balanced processing and by nurturing a ðirit of inquiry(Melynk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). The major difference between EPB and research is that both require extensive literature reviews. Whereas quality improvement (QI) promotes improvements for better patient outcomes systemically (Conner, 2014). For instance, a healthcare crisis where many people are affected, and hospitals are inundated is a learning opportunity for quality improvements in infection control, teamwork, and leadership (Shah et al.,2021). This scenario could be grounds for research project evidence as opposed to evidence from research.
