Description

Respond to the following peer discussion:

Discuss some of the primary ethical challenges that biomedical researchers encounter in the face of emerging technology?

There are a number of moral issues with relying on AI-based diagnosis. Problems with informed consent, a factor related to data security, may go unnoticed if automation is used. A patient’s information may be accessed by unauthorized people if a system is hacked. Keeping data safe and secure in the digital era is difficult, especially when dealing with sensitive information like electronic health records (Piasecki et al., 2021). Some of the information gathered during research is sensitive and may be directly connected to participants, and this identifier-rich data poses a number of challenges for researchers at every level of the process. Misuse of personal information, inaccurate information, lack of monitoring and responsibility, lack of respect for participants, and immoral use of data and resources are some of the other ethical difficulties faced by biomedical researchers when employing technology (Vaisman et al., 2020).

How can the ethical principles and protocols of the Belmont Report address modern ethical concerns and issues in highly technical modern clinical environments?

The Belmont Report lays out three guiding ethical principles: compassion, fairness, and dignity for all. The principles offer recommendations for dealing with the moral dilemmas that arise during clinical research. That each individual is unique and deserving of respect for his or her own beliefs and preferences is central to the concept of respect for the person. As a result, people should always participate willingly and with all the knowledge they need. Protecting others from harm while helping them benefit as much as possible is what beneficence requires. On a last point, fairness as a principle calls for uniform treatment of all players. In light of this, the principles’ contribution to the discussion of ethical concerns in contemporary clinical settings is highly significant (Office for Human Research Protections, n.d.).

Ensure to provide either a real-life example or realistic scenario for your proof of concept:

These moral concerns revolve on issues including whether or not informed consent should be required, how far confidentiality between doctors and their patients should be extended, and what happens if a patient is re-identified throughout the course of embedded research. Leaked information from an individual’s electronic health record (HER) might be used to discriminate against those seeking medical care, insurance, or a bank account, or to label them as a dangerous criminal (Piasecki et al., 2021). Also the embedded research creates moral dilemmas for healthcare providers and organizations, since some may feel uneasy about making patient data available for research out of concern for the potential damage to their relationships with patients and their credibility. Electronic health records (EHRs) can also be viewed as a tool for patients to gain agency and a means for patients to actively participate in medical advancement and public health protection (Piasecki et al., 2021).
