Lab 2: Experimental Research Set-Up
1. I am passionate about the impact of the holidays (e.g., Christmas, Halloween,
Valentineé. I adore the numerous decorations, the fun, warm feeling shows that are
shown at this time, and especially how people give (e.g., charity, volunteer) to help
others. I believe there are certain components of the holidays that should be further
examined.
2. What are the components that encourage higher give-gifting and donation rates during the
holiday season? What are components of holiday television that encourage more kind
behaviors during the holiday?
3. The independent is the narrative shown to participants: Holiday narrative, non-holiday
narrative, and control where they watch nothing at all.
4. The dependent variables are participants$onation behavior (e.g., how much they donate,
how often they donate) and volunteer behaviors (e.g., how many volunteered, how they
volunteered).
5. I would measure the dependent variable through self-report by asking participants how
much money they donated and how often they donated a week after they watched the
narrative. I would also measure how many hours the participants engaged in a week after
they watched the narrative condition.
6. The population of interest will be females ages 21-45 because the majority of holiday
viewers were this demographic. Additionally, participants must celebrate the holiday and
must already volunteer or donate. A family or friend must not have passed away due to
COVID-19.
7. In this experiment, participants will be divided into watching: (1) a holiday narrative, (2)
a non-holiday narrative, and (3) a control group. In the control group, they will not watch
any narrative at all. After watching the narrative condition, participants will be asked a
week later to disclose their donation and volunteer behaviors. These behaviors include
how much money they donated, how often they donated, and how many hours they
donated. The experiment will help us understand components of the holidays narrative on
prosocial/charitable behaviors.
