Why do advertisers work so hard to be funny?
Turns out, our Caveman Brain not only enjoys a good joke. It respects humor. Pyschologists have a couple theories. There’s ample evidence that people we find funny also score higher on intelligence tests, including emotional intelligence tests. That means humor might be an indicator of people who can benefit group performance and cohesion.
There’s also the possibility that humor is a kind of risk-taking behavior. Imagine trying to tell a joke and having it fall flat. You might bore people or even offend them. So, when a person pulls off a joke, they’ve shown that they can execute a risky manuever, and our Caveman Brain is attracted to those displays of “bravery”.
Bottom line: Being funny might be a key way that humans assert and recognize status. That makes it a powerful tool for advertisers, politicians, even doctors and nurses.
So, I’m wondering if you can remember an ad that you found really funny that actually inspired you to try a product? Or maybe a salesperson who used humor to close a deal? Or even a major life decision – something about education, career, or healthcare – where you trusted a funny person over a serious one?
