OSU Raymond Carver Chef House Short Story Review Essay
Question Description
I’m working on a editing writing question and need support to help me study.
For this assignment, you will produce a 4-6 page essay (about 1,200-1,500-words, double spaced) that evaluates Raymond Carver’s short story, “Chef’s House (Links to an external site.)” and recommends to someone who has never read the story if it is worth reading or not. You will evaluate it according to 3 criteria (listed below), which you may define in your essay however you would like. In your essay, you must use textual evidence to argue if the piece is 1) well-written; 2) entertaining; and 3) an interesting story. You may define those three criteria however you wish, but their definitions must be explicit in your essay, and you will use textual evidence (quoted, paraphrased, and summarized from the short story itself) to support your conclusions and make a recommendation to your reader about the story.
The final version of the essay should be in MLA format. In addition to standard formatting, you will also have a works cited page with 1 entry (citing Carver’s story). As always, I will post instructions on how to do this in the announcements during this unit. The use of outside source material is not recommended for this assignment. Opinions on the story should be your own. The grading rubric (holistic, letter grade assessment) will be posted during Week 3 of the unit.
