Post 1 from Toni,
I graduated from nursing school in 2019 with an Associate degree in nursing. I finally took the
plunge and am now achieving my BSN. I live on the outskirts of Boston and have two young
boys. I have worked in nephrology since 2008. I was a dialysis technician for ten years then
decided to pursue a nursing degree. I work for one of the largest dialysis companies in the world.
After I obtain a BSN, I plan on achieving my nephrology certificate and would like to grow in
dialysis nursing as a leader. My goal is to enroll in graduate school as this opens more
opportunities for growth.
To inform clinical decision-making and enhance patient outcomes, evidence-based nursing
practice incorporates the best available evidence from research with clinical expertise, patient
preferences, and values. This strategy is essential as it guarantees that nursing interventions are
founded on the most current and trustworthy information available, which can improve patient
outcomes, raise patient satisfaction, and lead to more effective and (Abu-Baker et al., 2021).
Evidence-based practice and nursing knowledge are influenced in various ways by history,
theory, and research. Understanding the development of nursing practice and the contributions of
nursing pioneers, which can influence current practice, is based on knowledge of nursing history.
Understanding the relationships between concepts and how they affect nursing practice is made
possible by the framework provided by nursing theory (Gerrish et al., 2007). Research, including
quantitative and qualitative studies, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses, provides empirical
evidence to support nursing practice and informs the development of clinical guidelines and
protocols. However, despite the importance of evidence-based practice, its implementation has
several barriers. These include a lack of time and resources, inadequate training and education,
resistance to change, and organizational cultures that do not support evidence-based practice.
Additionally, there may be challenges in accessing and interpreting research findings,
particularly for nurses who are not trained in research methods (Alatawi et al., 2020). In order to
overcome these barriers, healthcare organizations must make a commitment to developing an
evidence-based practice culture, giving nurses the necessary tools and resources, and providing
them with ongoing education and training to improve their research literacy and critical thinking
abilities.
Post 2 from Emmanuel,
My name is Emmanuel. I am a registered nurse at Stafford Hospital
Emergency Department. I graduated from nursing school in December
2019. Though I live in Virginia with my family, I travelled to and worked in
New York for two years to help fight the COVID 19 during the pandemic.
My goal is to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthesiologist
(CRNA) and getting my BSN is a step in the right direction in achieving
that goal.
Evidence-based practice is extremely valuable due to the
advancement of technology incorporated with the continuous evolving
means of delivering care in the 21st century. In a study, it was found that
specialty certification of nurses attributed to psychosocial beliefs and
perceptions of evidence-based practices but not their education level,
(Gigli et al., 2020). In other words, specialty certification from an
accredited body like the American Association of Critical-Care Nurse
Certification Corporation makes nurses very knowledgeable and
equipped with skills that improves quality of care because specialty
certifications serve as a means of translating evidence into practice.
Evidence-based practice gives the caregiver the current know-how
which increases quality of care and patient satisfaction. Answer the
question below.
Evidence-based practice (EBP) is when nurses make patient care
decisions based on the current research-proven measures. These
measures have been studied and deemed clinically appropriate with
associated benefits to improve care outcomes, reduce cost, increase
efficiency, and many more. Nursing has come a long way with respect to
improvement due to EBP. How the profession was practiced in the 19th
century is very much different compared to now and will continue to
evolve due to EBP. For instance, in the 19th century newborns skin to
skin with their mothers was not widely practiced as it is now because
there was no evidence of the clinical benefits. Newborns skin to skin with
parents produce biomarkers like oxytocin and cortisol that reflect
physiologic response to stress, (Forde et al., 2022). How the nursing
profession was practiced in the past and how it is practiced now will
generate theories, and theories will be researched and if proven to be
clinically beneficial, it will become the new norm and new knowledge for
nurses.
According to a study by Mathieson et al., (2018), nurses face
multiple barriers in the implementation of EBP that depletes their level of
engagement. Some of these barriers are but not limited to shortage of
nurses, heavy workload, lack of time, limited knowledge of EBP and
family commitments. Personally, I see shortage of nurses as a major
hinderance to EBP because of its domino effects. Shortage of nurses
leads to an increase in workload, lack of time to undertake or study
research, leading to burnout, and eventually lack of engagement.
