In order to better understand our US election system and discern the difference between the popular vote and the electoral college, you will be writing a journal discussion on what you learn from the sources below:

- Read this report by the PEW RESEARCH CENTER 3/13/20. A majority of Americans continue to favor replacing Electoral College with a nationwide popular vote (Links to an external site.)
- Watch: ONE OPTION: NATIONAL POPULAR VOTE – Explains the problem of winner take all state laws electoral college, the difficulties of changing the constitution, and shows one solution that circumvents the constitution. There are other videos on their website that discuss big states and small states to show that the current system is not protecting the interests of small states, and that larger states would not be controlling the elections.
- After viewing the videos and reading the news articles, please answer the following questions by using examples from each source. Remember to use complete sentences and proper grammar.
- If the election relied solely on the popular vote, how might many Americans votes ‘not count’ toward the election outcome? Explain.
- How do supporters of the National Popular Vote Act contradict the idea above?
- What are your conclusions about the Electoral College? Support your answer. Include sociological concepts and theories where possible.
