  • C. Media Analysis
  • First itàimportant to watch the film carefully with a critical eye.  Consider why you¥ been assigned to watch a film and write an analysis. How does this activity fit into the course? Why have you been assigned this particular film? What are you looking for in connection to the course content? Here are some tips on how to watch the clip critically, just as you would an entire film:
  • Give the clip your undivided attention at least once. Pay close attention to details and make observations that might start leading to bigger questions.
  • Watch the clip a second time. For this viewing, you will want to focus specifically on those elements of film analysis that your class has focused on, so review your course notes. For example, from whose perspective is this clip shot? What choices help convey that perspective? What is the overall tone, theme, or effect of this clip?

Take notes while you watch for the second time. Notes will help you keep track of what you noticed and when, if you include timestamps in your notes. Timestamps are vital for citing scenes from a film!

D. Media Analysis Prompt

Film: The Lemon Grove Incident

  • Basic levels of Education were viewed as a necessity for literacy and workforce skills. Higher levels such as secondary schooling in college, however, would permit Mexican American children access to a segment of society Anglos reserved for themselves. Nomenclature of schools is telling in this regard. Particularly in Texas, schools with mostly white children were called merican7hile schools designated for children of Spanish or Mexican descent were called exican./li>
  • Incident: Kept quiet from State Courts
  • The Lemon Grove Incident describes a series of events that took place in southeast San Diego, when white administrators attempted to segregate Mexican students from other “white” students. The local school board acted on their economic and political power by deciding, without consulting the Mexican families, to repurpose a barn for educating their children. This is how many decisions were made that resulted in the segregation of white people and minority groups, showing that whites have been able to make decisions with only their considerations in mind (and without considering the consequences for others).

Parents defend Students

Mexican families who lived through the experience believed their children deserved to go to the same school as other (white) students.   This is extremely valid and is likely to be partly motivated by their own experiences with segregation and separation, and not wanting that for their own children.   Today, school segregation and separation at the border still affect Mexican families, among other national groups, on both sides of the border.

The purpose of the film %mon Grove Incident)s to educate the audience on the true events that took place.  The film shows the perspective of both parties involved in the incident, Mexican families and the school board, through reenactments and interviews.  Doing this allows the viewer to recognize the decision process that occurred when the school board approved the separation of schools. This perspective allows the audience to see that the decision was made without proper motive and was unjust.
