- There are no step-by-step instructions
- There is no sample for children to follow
- There is no right or wrong way to explore and create
- The art is focused on the experience and on exploration of techniques, tools, and materials
- The art is unique and original
- The experience is relaxing or calming
- The art is entirely the childrens own
- The art experience is a childs choice
- Ideas are not readily available online

Goals of the Art Program
1st-The first and main goal in all art experiences for young children is: Process over Product.
- Art is a form of creative expression.
- In the process the child expresses experiences and feelings (self-expression).
- The main focus should not be on what the finished product looks like.
We want to emphasize the process of art.
- Children are learning to build their skills with materials
Note: Please read page 269: Arts and Crafts-Two different Processes.
2nd- The second major objective of the art program is to meet the needs of the children.
- The program must be designed for their age, abilities, and interest level.
3rd- Another important objective is to give children the opportunity to think originally and work independently.
- Encourage exploration of various materials and give children choices.
4th-Another important objective is creative thinking.
- Allow children to work freely and flexibly.
5th- Allow children to develop at their own pace.
- For young children (toddlers) focus on and give and opportunities to explore materials and as they get older (3,4,5 years) they will develop skills and gain control over the materials and use them for self-expression.
