KU Establishing Goals Consistent with Your Values and Ethics Discussion
Description
Part 1
Establishing goals consistent with your values and ethics
Consider what you learned about establishing goals consistent with your values and ethics. Identify and discuss a goal you set for yourself and accomplished after much hard work and dedication. What motivated you and how did the results make you feel? Also offer an example of a goal that you set but did not meet, and reflect on what you learned in the chapter that helped you understand why you were not successful (i.e., perhaps think about what element of a SMART goal was lacking).
- Begin your discussion by reading your assigned chapter and conducting additional research in the Keiser University Online Library on the significance of establishing goals consistent with your values and ethics. Share what you learned by synthesizing your research into your own words and citing your sources. At the minimum, you should cite your textbook and one additional scholarly source.
- Next, offer a personal connection by identifying and discussing a goal you set for yourself and accomplished after much hard work and dedication. What motivated you and how did the results make you feel? Also offer an example of a goal that you set but did not meet and reflect on what you learned in the chapter that helped you understand why you were not successful (i.e., perhaps think about what element of a SMART goal was lacking). Develop your examples and supporting evidence thoroughly.
- Complete your discussion by exploring how you might use the knowledge from this topic in your future professional and personal communication.
NOTE: Remember that your discussion response must include the following:
- A reflection on the concept we are discussing. Give us a summary of things you learned about this concept from your assigned chapter readings and additional research.
- A thorough example/discussion to support your reflection.
- A final statement that tells us what you take away from this week’s lesson.
- Properly formatted in-text citations and references.
- Strong grammar, spelling, and mechanics.
- In total your discussion should be at least 250 words.
When responding to your peers, be sure to connect on both personal and theoretical level by reacting to what was said, supporting your reactions with scholarly sources (e.g., your textbook), and identifying potential additional concepts or communication strategies to consider. End your responses with open-ended questions to extend conversations.
Participate in the Discussion board by clicking on the Discussion tab on your Course Home menu, or by following the link above.
- There are 4 discussions. You may choose any 1 to answer. While you should incorporate the content of assigned textbook readings and do additional scholarly research (to earn a high mark on the Reflection of Readings element), I discourage exclusive quoting or paraphrasing of the material. Instead, I ask you to present your own understanding of the information by sharing your knowledge and incorporating the information you learned. Be sure to extend that subject knowledge with examples and own explanations.
- Your main posts are due by Wednesday of this week (to earn a Distinguished score for timeliness please post on or before Wednesday, to earn a Proficient score post on Thursday).
- In addition to your main discussion, you are required to reply to at least 2 classmates in a discussion NOT selected for your main post (this means that if you choose to create a main post in “Self-assessment discussion,” then you should reply to classmates in any two of the other three threads – this is required, and responses posted to the same discussion you submitted your main post to will not be counted for peer credit. Responses to your classmates are due by Sunday.
- Finally, please follow up on responses from the instructor or your peers (in addition to your required two classmate replies) to show a Distinguished effort and to remain fully engaged throughout the learning week.
Part 2
Title: The Social Mirror
Purpose: To identify how others perceptions and views have affected and shaped our personalities, identities and self-image.
Resources: This essay is a reflection exercise. I have provided you with a template where these questions are already entered. All you need to do is enter your own information by typing it right into the template. Please use the template and answer all questions. Assignments that do not answer all required questions will be rendered incomplete and earn “0” credit.
Activity Instructions:
Complete this assignment based on your first Unit readings for the week. To recognize the potential inaccuracy or incompetence of the “social mirror,” or others’ opinions of you as a person, take a moment to reflect on how the social mirror has affected you. Reflect back on all aspects of your life: personal (dealing with family and friends, roommates, neighbors, significant others), academic (teachers, coaches, classmates), and professional (bosses, co-workers, subordinates, mentors) to examine what influence others have had on your self-image and other areas of importance to you (community, religion, sports, etc.).
Answer the questions in the template in comprehensive, complete sentences. Do not provide brief answers. Instead, compose at least 4-5 full sentences (I.e., a full paragraph) that answer each of the posed questions.
Please remember that your task is to not only write your own assessment, but to show that you are able to draw connections between your readings and your reflection. Use concepts and theories from the appropriate chapters, explain your understanding of their application, and show how they help you understand yourself. Do not forget to tie each answer to personal and professional communication effectiveness. Finally, remember to cite properly in-text (Author, YEAR) and at the end of your reflection with a fully formatted APA reference.
Integrating and Citing Sources in Essays
Examples of Integrating and Citing Sources in Your Essay
Examples of an in-text citation:
According to Social Information Processing Theory, senders of the message utilize a variety of options, such as timing, style, and verbiage content to create as favorable interaction environment as possible (Walther, 1992).
Social presence spans a variety of contexts, including organizational, instructional, and relational communication encounters (Maguire, Heinemann-Lafave, & Connaughton, in press).
