1.One of the first steps to take on your cultural competency journey is to think about your own beliefs and how your cultural identity has shaped you.
Please take a few minutes to think about and then write down what some of your beliefs, values, and bias are on a few of the following topics:
The notion that all people are more or less equal
Expressing opinions
Disclosing personal information
How people usually greet each other
Family values
Punctuality and responsibility in keeping appointments
Who is responsible for care of children and elderly
Individual goals or group goals
2.Using the reading Ladson-Billings (1994):
(1). Pick ONE of the characteristics of culturally relevant teaching listed below (can also be found on page 123-125 of the reading):
a. When students are treated as competent, they are likely to demonstrate competence
b. When teachers provide instructional ãaffolding,3tudents can move from what they know to what they need to know
c. The focus of the classroom must be instructional
d. Real education is about extending students4hinking and abilities
e. Effective teaching involves in-depth knowledge of both the students and the subject matter
AND THEN
(2). Describe and provide an example for how each of the teachers Lewis, Devereaux, Rossi, and Walsh in the reading each possessed/did not possess the ONE characteristic you chose to focus on.
