Description
(A) Step 4 – There are 2 systems, small scale (2″ extruder, 250 lbm/hr, 5-hole die, and 8″ extruder, 4750 lbm/hr, with die you are designing). “Subject to the constraint that the average shear rate experienced by the material must be the same for both the pilot and production plant systems, use your knowledge of similarity and scalingand the results above to determine (a) the dimension of the die holes in the full-scale system, (b) the number of die holes required in the pilot plant die to meet production requirements.” That means use results from step 3 for scaling!
(B) Use your knowledge of fluid dynamics to determine the pressure drop through the plant-scale die selected in step 5 when the flow rate is fixed to make the shear rate identical to the calculated value for the productiion-scale system.
(C) Your project report should be literally a report. For each step explain what you did and why in a narrative (essay) form. Don’t just list equations. They were pretty much all given in the lecture notes! I want to understand the thinking behind your viualization of the problem and choices you made in applying what you have learned to the design of the die.
