Response 1:
Is the NCAA vs. Alston Case a step up or a step down for the NCAA?
The NCAA vs. Alston case is centered around the NCAA’s regulations regarding student-athlete compensation and whether these regulations violate NCAA anti-trust laws. Alston argued that the NCAA’s rules limiting compensation for college athletes to scholarships and stipends were anti-competitive and that athletes should be allowed to receive more benefits. In June 2021, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Alston, stating that the NCAA’s restrictions on education-related benefits violated antitrust laws. As an athlete, I feel good about the fact I can make a little extra cash on the side, but I feel that a scholarship is still quite expensive to take care of, so I could go either way.
Response 2:
How does the NCAA vs. Alston case affect student athletes today?
With the NCAA vs. Alston case it allowed student athletes to monetarily benefit based on their name, image, and likeness. This is great for athletes to be able to benefit from something they have worked their whole life for. The only issue I have involves they also receive scholarships, while students that get good grades may also receive scholarships, it sort of takes the student focus out of the student-athlete because it makes them practically professional athletes when profiting off their name, image, and likeness.
