Houston Community College Cultural Anthropology The Human Challenge Questions
Description
POST 1:
From one culture to the next, body adornment and modification have been part of human artistic expressiveness for centuries. Read about some examples of this at http://penn.museum/sites/body_modification/bodmodtattoo.shtml (Links to an external site.)
In recent decades, tattooing has becoming increasingly common in many industrialized modern countries. Interview someone who has at least one tattoo.
Why did they choose to have a tattoo? What does the tattoo symbolize to them? What are the social responses to their tattoo — that is, how do different people react to it?
Based on the responses of your interviewee, can you make any cultural comparisons between body modification practices of the past and tattoos of today?
