GEO 201 GEOGRAPHY OF URBAN DIVERSITY

City is Los Angeles

As we discussed in class, many bird’s eye view maps were created of existing and future cities during the late 1800s as a means to attract people, business and investment to those locations.   For this assignment, search for a birds eye view map of your city produced in the late 1800s (approximately) and do some analysis of the map. 

Submit:

• The image of the map you found (include a link to the source)
• A well-written paragraph in which you respond to the following: 
  • Keeping in mind the purpose of the map (to attract investment and people), what elements and symbols did the producer of the map include and why?  What aspects of the city was the producer trying to emphasize?   Be sure to address specific elements (example: ships, trees, parks, greenspace, etc) and discuss their significance.  The map was essentially propaganda to “sell” the virtues of the city, how did the producer of the map do that? 

If you cannot find a bird’s eye for your city, find one for the next closest city.  Include in your write up an explanation for why you think there is no map for your city.  Be sure that you have researched thoroughly before giving up finding one for your city!
