There are some contrasting beliefs underlying the debate over the issue of mascots depicting American Indian figures. In some cases, there are American Indians who are ok with them being mascots because it is a way for their culture to be showcased to more people who typically do not know much about American Indians. However, there are a great majority of people who find the depictions of American Indian figures to not only be false but also very degrading because it represents misleading and disrespectful attributes of their culture. A sociologist of physical activity would be most likely to want to eliminate the use of American Indian mascots because they would likely want respectful change that leaves all parties involved satisfied. In this situation, the sociologist would want a satisfied atmosphere were all cultures are truthfully represented and not used just to be a mascot.

Sociologists of physical activity would not agree to such practices and would work to stop it in order to achieve equality and respect for other cultures.

The sociologist would likely argue that the use of these mascots demeans this group instead of empowering them. Mascots are often seen as caricatures and cartoons, sometimes performing silly things in order to enliven sporting events. Events like these would not empower people of this group to reach their full potential.

The iconography utilized in American Indian mascots, according to critics, is misleading and insulting. They think the phony ceremonies performed by teams wearing American Indian mascots are deceptive, demeaning, and degrade their culture. The supporters of American Native mascots are virtually entirely white. They say the imagery is an homage. Some who preserve American Indian symbolism in sports argue that being termed “brave” is praise. They claim that this gives the impression that American Indians are aggressive and fearless. A sociologist of physical activity is most likely to advocate for the removal of American Indian mascots from sports teams. This is due to a significant objective. This objective aims to criticize physical exercise programs in hopes of recognizing flaws and offering modifications that will improve equity and human well-being. Maintaining the existing quo would not improve Native People’s equality.
