1. What is the history of Los Angeles and housing covenants? What was its purpose?
2. What were the motivating factors for street gang formation in the 1950’s and 1960’s in black
communities in LA? Did de-industrialization play a role? Did lack of resources and educational
opportunities also play a role?
3. Did LAPD have a role in the rising tensions of gangs, the African American communities,
and LA? Why did the Watts riots occur?
4. Did the Black Power movement have an impact in the reduction of gang activity in Los
Angles in the late ’60s and ’70s? If so how?
5. Do you see generations of Crips and Blood members? How many generations? When did
these two gangs form?
6. Was Los Angeles divided geographically by gang turfs? Who controlled the East Side?
Who controlled the West Side?
7. Why was violence so pervasive between these two gangs? What did Respect mean?
8. Why are the younger members pulled into shootings? Did they grow up in an environment
where guns are normal?
9. How did the Bloods and Crips perpetuate the crack cocaine epidemic? Did the crack cocaine
epidemic have an impact on increased gang membership, activity, and violence?
10. What impact if any does the over incarceration of black and brown men play on the gang
problem?
11. Was there ever a truce between the Bloods and Crips? If so when? What impact did
Rebuild L.A. play in this truce? Was it successful?
12. What were facts you learned from the video that you didn’t know about the Crips and Bloods
before?
