East Los Angeles College Strange Case of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde Fiction Analysis
Question Description
As we have discussed, your final project will be to analyze one fictional story of your choosing that falls into the genre of crime fiction. Your job will be to take the conventions of this genre that we have discussed in class, and apply them to your own chosen fictional story.
You will showcase this information in a google slides presentation. The final will be worth 50 points. You may choose to present the final to the class, for an additional 5 points of extra credit on the day that it is due:
The presentation will be broken down into 3 categories. Make sure to have a title slide with your name on it.
Part 1: Plot & Characters (1-2 slides)
Summarize the plot of the fictional story you have decided to write about. This summary can be in bullet point or paragraph form. Make sure you include a brief summary of who the main characters are and where and when the story takes place.
Part 2: Crime Conventions: (5 slides)
Analyze how the author or director applies the convention of crime fiction we have spoken about in class to your fictional story. When and how do these things come up?
Remember the convention are:
- The initial crime
- An alibi
- Detective/police work
- Lies/manipulation/misleading information
- Suspense and the feeling of mystery.
Part 3: Conclusions (1-2 slides)
Evaluate the effectiveness of the storytelling in this crime fiction. In other words, consider the following questions:
- Did the author/director succeed in getting you to feel wrapped up in the story?
- Were you scared or did you feel suspense at any point in the story? Why do you think you felt this way?
- Give your opinion: Why do you think mysterious, scary or dangerous stories are so interesting to us? What is it about crime fiction makes it so popular?
