Instructions from my Professor-

Analytical Paper

2-3 pages (about 1000 words)

From the late 19th century to World War I, several artistic movements focused on color to transform the conventions of the visual language in painting and to propose new artistic visions and new styles. These experiments with color are very different from previous uses and functions of color in the art of the past and transformed painting.

Select 3 different works by 3 different artists that demonstrate the importance of color in the avant-garde of the late 19th and early 20th century.

You may select examples from movements such as: Fauvism, die Brücke (German Expressionism), Der Blaue Reiter (the Blue Rider) or from the work of Cézanne, Van Gogh or Gauguin.

Your paper should include:

– A detailed color analysis for each of the 3 paintings.:

1-Discuss the importance of color for each selected painting, with precise and thorough examples for each of the works. Study color and movement, color and space/depth, color and composition, color and rhythms.

Study these and any other relevant aspect of the painting involving color for each of the 3 examples (it could be a particular use of a color, or texture effects …)

2- Discuss the meaning of colors for each work: expressive qualities, use of color symbolism).

– A stylistic/historical analysis:

Explain the innovative use of color by these artists. You should particularly study how their creative use of color is different from older painting styles. You can contrast these paintings to Realist paintings of the 19th century. For example you can look up the work of artists such as: Manet, Courbet, Millet to contrast and point what is new in the use of color and makes it innovative.

Use a few (2 or 3) examples of older paintings in order to make your contrast study.

– Do not forget to cite the sources of information used. Use the MLA format sheet distributed in class at the beginning of the semester. Sources should be on a separate page, in alphabetical order.

Write the “ID” of each work on the title page of your paper:

Name of artist

Title of work

Date

Medium

Dimensions

Collection

You may include a thumbnail image if you like, but this is not mandatory.

– Do not forget an introduction presenting your discussion and a conclusion.

The intro should present the topic of the paper in a couple of simple sentences. The conclusion should recap the most important points of your study.

– Be thorough in the color and the stylistic analysis. The more precise you are in your discussion, the better your paper will be. Also do not hesitate to proofread your paper many times.
