For this assignment, I need you to pick an argument and then write three statements to support it, one that would appeal to a person’s sense of pathos, one that would appeal to a person’s sense of ethos, and one that would appeal to a person’s sense of logos. I will give an example, which you can use as a model.

ARGUMENT: Illegal drug use is detrimental because it encourages gang violence.

PATHOS: 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton performed with her school band at President Obama’s inauguration one week before she was shot and killed by gang members targeting rivals over a drug feud.

ETHOS:  I have examined research both for and against legalizing drugs, and I have reached the conclusion that legalizing drugs will most likely reduce both the violence related to trafficking and increase public safety and health when society sees drug addiction as a disease and not a crime.

LOGOS: Discriminatory enforcement of drug possession laws has produced racial disparities at all levels of the criminal justice system. Black people comprise 13% of the U.S. population and use drugs at similar rates as other groups, but they comprise 29% of those arrested for drug law violations and 35% of those incarcerated in state prison for drug possession.
