In his draft book and his lectures, DeLong focused his interpretation of twentieth-century economic history around a particular Grand Narrative: the explosion of human technological capabilities that followed the revolutionary development of the industrial research lab, the modern corporation, and globalization starting in 1870, and the ramifications of that explosion for human technology, for the economy, for human wealth, for demography, for feminism, for inclusion, for tyranny, for inequality, and for the failures of economic management that left many very dissatisfied and triggered multiple revolutions and attempted revolutions in modes of political economic organization. Considering that Grand Narrative, what you have learned in this course, and what else you know, how do the arguments Allen makes and the conclusions he reaches in his Global Economic History bear on DeLong’s Grand Narrative.
